What is a renal artery Doppler ultrasound?

A renal artery Doppler ultrasound measures the blood flow to the kidney. This noninvasive test is usually done to identify and understand abnormalities in the kidney, like renal artery stenosis or the renal arteries becoming narrow or stiff.

Why is a renal artery Doppler ultrasound performed?

A renal artery doppler ultrasound is typically recommended for people with:

  • Acute renal failure
  • New-onset hypertension
  • Refractory (resistant) hypertension
  • Renal artery disease
  • Abdominal bruit
  • Post-intervention monitoring

How can you prepare for an artery Doppler ultrasound?

Your healthcare provider would usually guide you with specific instructions to prepare for your abdominal vascular ultrasound. In general, you should:

  • Avoid consuming any food or beverages for six hours prior to the procedure
  • Take your medications with a small amount of water, but only with your physician's approval. Diabetic patients should inform their physician beforehand
  • Avoid smoking or chewing gum before the exam
  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes and avoid wearing dresses
  • Remove any jewelry before the examination

How the procedure works

You’ll lie comfortably while the technician applies a warm, water-based gel to your abdomen. The sonographer will glide the transducer over your abdomen and rib cage to capture images of your blood vessels and organs. As the sonographer examines your blood vessels, you will hear sounds resembling a heartbeat.

You may have to use various breathing techniques or adjust your position to ensure the best images are obtained.

At HeartCare Texas, our commitment is to provide precise and comprehensive cardiovascular diagnostics, ensuring that you receive the best possible care for your heart and blood vessels.
