Carotid Artery Stenting

Carotid artery stenting (CAS) is a vital procedure designed to restore blood flow to the brain and reduce the risk of stroke. The technique involves placing a small, expandable stent in the carotid artery to keep it open and ensure proper circulation. Our experienced cardiologists at HeartCare Texas use advanced imaging and precise methods to perform the procedure, prioritizing patient safety and comfort. With a patient-centered approach, we aim to provide the highest standard of care, ensuring optimal outcomes for those suffering from carotid artery disease.

What is carotid artery stenting?

Carotid artery stenting is a minimally invasive procedure aimed at treating narrowed carotid arteries, which are the major blood vessels that supply blood to the brain. The procedure involves placing a small, expandable tube called a stent into the carotid artery to keep it open and allow blood to flow more freely. This helps prevent strokes by reducing the risk of blood clots forming and traveling to the brain.

Why may you need the procedure?

You may need carotid artery stenting if you have significant narrowing or blockage in one or both of your carotid arteries. This condition, known as carotid artery disease, can increase the risk of stroke, which occurs when blood flow to a part of your brain is interrupted or reduced.

Symptoms of carotid artery disease can include sudden numbness or weakness, trouble speaking, vision problems, or severe headaches. If lifestyle changes and medications are not sufficient to manage the condition, stenting may be recommended to restore proper blood flow and reduce stroke risk.

Our skilled cardiologists perform carotid artery stenting to restore proper blood flow and reduce stroke risk. Before the procedure, we insert an IV line in your arm or hand and administer sedation to ensure you remain relaxed and comfortable. We also numb the area in the groin where the incision will be made.

During the procedure, our specialists make a small incision in a blood vessel in the groin and insert a thin guiding wire. Over this wire, we thread a catheter with a deflated balloon to your carotid artery, using X-ray imaging for precise placement.

We then inflate the balloon to widen the narrowed artery section and place a mesh stent to keep it open. Afterward, we remove the balloon and catheter, close the incision, and apply a bandage.

What are the restrictions after a carotid stent placement?

After a carotid stent placement, it’s important to follow your doctor's instructions to ensure proper healing and prevent complications. You may need to:

  • Avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting for a few weeks.
  • Take prescribed medications, such as blood thinners, to prevent blood clots.
  • Attend follow-up appointments to monitor the stent and your overall condition.
  • Adopt a heart-healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet, regular exercise, and avoiding smoking, to support vascular health.

How long can carotid artery stenting last?

Carotid artery stenting can provide long-lasting benefits, but the longevity of the stent can vary depending on individual factors such as overall health, lifestyle, and adherence to medical advice. Regular follow-up appointments with your cardiologist at HeartCare Texas are crucial to monitor the stent and ensure it remains effective. With proper care, many patients enjoy improved blood flow and reduced risk of stroke for many years after the procedure.

At HeartCare Texas, we are dedicated to providing comprehensive cardiovascular care, including advanced procedures like carotid artery stenting, to help you maintain optimal health and well-being.
