Vascular Ultrasound

A vascular ultrasound is a noninvasive medical imaging test that assesses the blood flow to arteries and veins of the arms, neck, and legs. This test is mainly used to diagnose blood clots and peripheral artery disease.

At HeartCare Texas, we provide comprehensive abdominal vascular ultrasound services to help diagnose and monitor various vascular conditions within the abdomen. This non-invasive, painless imaging technique allows our skilled healthcare professionals to assess blood flow and detect any abnormalities in the abdominal blood vessels.

What is an abdominal vascular ultrasound?

An abdominal vascular ultrasound evaluates the main aorta and the major arteries, including the renal (kidney) arteries that branch from the aorta. This test is typically recommended for:

  • Patients with a family history of aortic aneurysms
  • Individuals diagnosed with coronary artery disease
  • Men aged 65-75 with a history of smoking

The procedure involves using a transducer to send sound waves into the body. These waves echo back, allowing the doctor to visualize the size of organs, blood flow, tissues, and any abnormal masses.

Why is an abdominal vascular ultrasound performed?

An abdominal vascular ultrasound is mostly performed to evaluate the blood vessels and organs in the abdominal area. Healthcare providers usually suggest this noninvasive test if you have issues affecting any of the following areas:

  • Blood vessels in the abdomen
  • Gallbladder
  • Intestines
  • Kidneys
  • Liver
  • Pancreas
  • Spleen

For instance, an abdominal ultrasound can help identify the cause of stomach pain or bloating. It can detect kidney stones, liver disease, tumors, and other conditions. Your provider might also recommend this test if you're at risk for an abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Screening to check for abdominal aortic aneurysms

An abdominal vascular ultrasound is also done to check for abdominal aortic aneurysm. It can find this condition in people without symptoms, allowing for early treatment.

This is important because a ruptured aneurysm can cause life-threatening bleeding.

Abdominal vascular ultrasound at HeartCare Texas

At HeartCare Texas, we prioritize patient comfort and accuracy. Our experienced sonographers and advanced imaging technology provide a seamless and efficient experience.

How can you prepare for the test?

We will guide you with specific instructions, but in general, you should:

  • Refrain from eating or drinking for 8 hours before the test
  • Only take medications with your physician's approval
  • Remove any jewelry and clothing in the area being examined

How the Procedure Works

During the ultrasound, you lie on an examination table and expose your abdomen. The sonographer applies a warm, water-based gel to your skin, which helps transmit sound waves. Then, the sonographer uses a transducer to send and receive these sound waves, creating detailed images of your blood vessels and organs.

As the sonographer examines your blood flow, you may hear sounds similar to a heartbeat. To capture the best images, the sonographer may ask you to change positions or perform specific breathing techniques. Any mild pressure from the transducer is temporary and should not cause significant discomfort.
