The Arterial Doppler Study is an ultrasound test that uses high-frequency sound waves to bounce off your blood vessels. Physicians can detect abnormal flow, blood clots, or poor circulation by examining the color and movement of the blood.
The doppler test bounces sound waves off blood vessels and creates ultrasound images of the blood flow. To capture these images of your arms and legs, a water-soluble gel is applied to a transducer, a handheld device. This device emits high-frequency waves to the blood vessels. The physician will also place blood pressure cuffs around your body to monitor your blood pressure.
An arterial doppler is performed in case of low blood flow or any signs of blood clot or injury. It is also suggested if there are any plaques within the arteries, pain in the leg, ankle, heel, or skin discoloration. The test will help in diagnosing
Low blood circulation in lower extremity
Blood clot
Vascular tumor
A blocked artery
Bulging arteries
Any inflammation, narrowing, or hardening in the blood vessels
Arterial doppler tests are painless, and there are no risks involved. When you complete the test, you can go on with your daily life and resume normal activities.
There aren't any specific preparations necessary. If you are someone who smokes, you must refrain from smoking several hours before the test as it can alter test results. It would be best to wear loose-fitting clothes and to avoid any accessories in the examination area.
