Varicose veins are swollen, twisted, or enlarged veins that commonly occur in the leg. They are also known as varicosities and are easily seen running under the skin as dark blue or purple. The varicose veins are enlarged and overfilled with blood and do not work efficiently, so the blood flow is obstructed. This condition is usually innocuous; nonetheless, it can be painful and lead to severe problems.
Veins have valves that allow blood to flow in one direction. If the valves are damaged or faulty, the veins can fill back up with blood and become enlarged. Sitting or standing for hours without rest can cause pressure in the veins, damaging the valves.
Your physician will perform a physical exam and consult a few diagnosis tests like venous doppler ultrasound and venogram to determine the treatment method. Surgeries of procedures like sclerotherapy or ligation and stripping are suggested only if self-care methods and compression stockings are not enough.
Some self-care methods to treat varicose veins include:
Avoid standing for too long
Maintain a healthy weight
Exercise to improve circulation
Elevation of legs
Some of the risk factors leading to varicose veins or spider veins (a milder type of varicose veins) are:
Standing for a long time
Lack of physical activity
Obesity
Being over 50 years old
Leg injury
Smoking
Pregnancy
Menopause
Vascular varicose veins can appear in many different ways. They may be painful, bulging, and twisted. They may even be purple in color. Varicose veins are often associated with other medical conditions, such as venous ulcers or blood clots. If you experience any of the mentioned symptoms, consult your physician as soon as possible:
Blue-purple misshapen veins
Swelling and skin discoloration
Shiny skin
