What is Interventional Cardiology?
As a subspecialty field of cardiology, interventional cardiology specializes in non-surgical catheter-based treatment techniques to diagnose and treat coronary artery disease, valvular disease, congenital heart defects, and structural heart disease.
An interventional cardiologist is not sound in traditional open-heart surgery. Instead, they specialize in catheter-based techniques that utilize distinct diagnostic and imaging techniques. They measure the patient’s blood pressure and flow in major arteries throughout the body and each heart chamber.
When to see an Interventional Cardiologist?
In case of severe heart or blood vessel issues, your physician will refer you to an interventional cardiologist to perform delicate life-saving or life-enhancing procedures.
Interventional cardiologists are well-trained to perform complex, delicate procedures such as placing stents in clogged arteries to allow proper blood flow, repairing holes in the heart to reduce the risk of a heart attack or stroke, or positioning devices for the heart to function correctly.
